The Parish
Gorbals Parish Church serves a busy inner city area, with a long history of poverty and immigration, which is in the midst of a massive physical regeneration process. Attempts are being made to mix social rent housing with owner occupied housing in a new way, and the proximity of the area to the city centre is making the area popular with house buyers. There remain eleven high rise blocks of flats, with some earmarked for early demolition. The parish includes the Citizens’ Theatre, the Sheriff Court, the City Mosque, Glasgow Nautical College, Gorbals Leisure Centre and the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice, and is bounded on the north by the River Clyde. Industrial estates form the western and eastern boundaries, while to the south the impending M74 motorway extension will further emphasise the rather cut off nature of the local community from its neighbours. The current population of around ten thousand will rise, as new housing is completed, to fifteen thousand over that next years.
